An intriguing development in the '90s British clubscene, Jamiroquai came together in 1992 with a blend of house rhythms and the influence of '70s soul, personified by vocalist Jay Kay, an occasional dead-ringer for Stevie Wonder. Also including drummer Derrick McKenzie, keyboard player Toby Smith, bassist Stuart Zender and vibes player Wallis Buchanan, the group debuted in October 1992 with the single "When You Gonna Learn?" on Acid Jazz Records. Signed to Sony soon after, Jamiroquai released its debut album Emergency on Planet Earth in 1993. The album exploded in the U.K., hitting number one on the album charts and going platinum. The Return of the Space Cowboy followed the first album into platinum territory upon its release in 1995, and though Travelling Without Moving had a slower start upon its release in 1996, it became the first Jamiroquai album to make moves across the Atlantic. The album hit gold, and earned the group several MTV Video Music Awards. Synkronized followed in 1999. |
